Gum disease is the most widespread infectious disease worldwide. It occurs when bacteria attack the gums or bone; which hold the teeth in place. If it is not controlled, it can cause bad breath, bleeding or swollen gums and subsequent loss of teeth. In addition to dental problems, it also increases the risk of heart attack many times over. It is generally caused due to improper oral hygiene, smoking, hereditary factors, over stressing the teeth, etc. It can be prevented by proper brushing, flossing, using mouthwash and regular professional cleaning (once in 6 months or once a year).
